I became involved
in the Statue of Liberty project shortly after the torch had
been removed for rebuilding. From the point I stayed involved
over the next 18 months through the rededication ceremoney when
the Statue was reopened by President Ronald Reagan. I put a crew
out on Liberty Island once every week to ten days, depending
on the level of activity and the state of the weather. Highlights
included coverage of the workshop where a French restoration
team worked side by side with a group of American union steelworkers
as they went about their restoration tasks. The French were building
a new torch while the steelworkers worked with state of the art
steel to make new reinforcing pins that hold up the great statue.
As the images
show, the documentation took place not only inside the workshops
but high on the scafolding itself. From that high vantage point
one could look out across a magnificent view of New York harbor.
The footage
produced by my unit was broadcast around the world in 17 different
countries.
